Most people who have chosen to follow the gentle parenting or conscious parenting movement have good intentions. They love their children! And oftentimes they are simply trying to parent in a way that is opposite to how they themselves were parented. Regardless of if you were raised in a Christian home or not, the conversation that Angie and Abbie have about this topic is profound and necessary. All of us who intend to leave an intentional legacy will likely look at how we were raised and find things we desire to not repeat because after all no one is perfect and no parent is perfect but Christ! He is our ultimate example! The problem though is that people often RUN and FLEE from anything that seems similar to how they were raised, rather than just looking to Christ and the Scriptures; thus, they end up pendulum swinging! This is incredibly dangerous because it is actually equivalent to the same problem one’s parents faced if they were not biblically parenting… it’s a NEW bondage with a NEW name, just different fruit.
This week’s episode is a powerful conversation between Abbie Halberstadt (mom of 10) and Angie Tolpin (Mom of 9) who dive into some deep conversations regarding HONEST motherhood. You will be encouraged, challenged to grow and even potentially evaluate if you have been deceived by a worldly influence in how you view your role in your home as a wife and mom!
Main Points From This Episode:
- It doesn’t matter what season in motherhood you are in, you can experience growing weary in doing good. You must preach the truth to yourself
- Every generation can be identified by a predominant parenting philosophy. Warning to NOT pendulum swing like previous generations but seek to be a Biblical Parent!
- You never arrive. We have been parenting for 25 years (Abbie for 20) and we are both still learning.
- There are many temptations to believe lies in our mothering– for example, if it is hard or you experience opposition or adversity that it’s not God’s will, when in reality usually it’s the opposite. God calls us to be stretched beyond ourselves often… because it’s then that He is most glorified.
- If you are struggling and experiencing conviction, don’t label it as guilt and condemnation or TOXIC. The Holy Spirit is in the line of business of convicting and helping people to grow! So don’t misinterpret what God might be teaching you.
- Gentle parenting is NOT a biblical parenting philosophy. Don’t be deceived by the word “gentle.” Angie and Abbie discuss many verses where we are called to be gentle but correct the definition of gentle from what it is in gentle parenting.
- Just because you experienced a hard season in parenting with one child at a particular age it doesn’t mean you will experience that with other children at that same age. Don’t borrow troubles.
Angie and Abbie as they discuss her newest book, You Bet Your Stretch Marks in the M IS FOR MAMA TRILOGY! Little fun fact, each of the chapters in her book include a letter of encouragement from a Titus 2 Sister in Christ who is older and more seasoned in Motherhood. Angie was honored to contribute to chapter 8– get the book and check out her contribution! Blending biblically grounded encouragement with her signature humor and straight talk, Abbie confronts cultural lies and invites moms to live with a legacy mindset. This perspective looks beyond today’s frustrations and into the eternal impact of faithful parenting.

Scriptures From This Episode:
– 2Galatians 6:9 – “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.“
– Isaiah 53:5 – “But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.”
– 1Peter 2:24 – “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.“
– Ephesians 4:2 – “with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,“
– Galatians 6:1-2 – “Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.“
– Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.“
– Romans 5:12-21 – “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
– Romans 13-14 –
