There is a temptation to view our children through rose-tinted glasses and actually stunt their spiritual growth by not holding them accountable for their sins. As humans, we all have this self-preserving instinct handed down to us generationally; it entered the world in the Garden of Eden. And as parents we tend to do the same thing in protection mode regarding when someone confronts an ungodly behavior or an offense with our children. But we must view our children through a biblical worldview and lens, admitting to the reality that our children sin. Instead of viewing the moments when we are
called by God to correct and discipline our children as an inconvenience, embarrassment, or a disruption and annoyance, we must begin to see them as opportunities for discipleship in Christ.
If we don’t hold our children accountable to their sin, they will never see their personal need for a Savior!
Discipline truly is another type of opportunity for discipleship. It’s not a separate thing. Within the Christian community over the years we have seen, read, and heard of discipline and discipleship taught as if they were different aspects of parenting, but we share our biblical reasoning, with scripture, on why we believe discipline is actually just another aspect of discipleship, and why this is so crucial in our parenting. Everything we do as parents is essentially an opportunity for discipleship, because discipleship according to Duet. 6:5-9 is woven through the fabric of one’s everyday lives.
Discipline teaches others the spiritual law of sowing and reaping and Hebrews 12:11 explains this truth:
“For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”
Our perspective on discipline MUST shift from being something we just do to obey God ourselves, or simply check a box in biblical parenting methodology, to an opportunity to lead our children to Christ and understanding of the gospel and truly understanding their need for a Savior and a thankfulness for what He has done for us.
